Hibernia Cafe brings Indian charm to Adelaide’s cafe scene

For Shyam Shah and Jay Gohil, the idea for Hibernia Cafe started over a cup of tea.

"It was actually a summer when we were sitting down at one of the tea places having a good Indian tea, and that's where we starting imagining something where we could deliver our passion."

That cup of tea was about more than the drink. It was about the culture around it.

"What happens in India is you have small tea stalls. In Australia, you’d go to a cafe, but there you have friends and family who will gather at the end of the day - gossiping about things."

It's a tradition they wanted to recreate in Australia, but it took a little bit of pushing in their newfound hometown.

"Adelaide has been a competitive market when it comes to business…but there are ample opportunities if you want to work really hard at something."

They certainly worked hard - but they also built deep ties with their local community.

"It’s been amazing to work for the local community, who are so friendly and so welcoming. They have been loving us from the day we took over the business.”

In the end, it’s effort coupled with genuine care for people around them that’s made Hibernia a success.

"The language of love…is the same all over the world. Any place we have been, every time you work hard and you love people around you, you get it back. That's what keeps us in this business."

"Every coffee you pour has to have love. Every dinner, or any lunch you try to put on the table, has to come through love, and then…everything happens."
